- עָיֵף, עָיֵיףm. (b. h.; עוּף I) 1) fainting, wearied; exhausted. Pesik. Zakhor, p. 28a> (ref. to Deut. 25:18) ע׳ בצמא faint from thirst; Tanḥ. Ki Thetse 10; a. e.Pl. עֲיֵפִים, עֲיֵפִין, עֲיֵי׳. Ex. R. s. 19 מפני שהיו ע׳ מן הריח because they were fainting from the smell (of the Passover sacrifice). 2) (= יָגֵעַ) hard-working, industrious. Snh.94b (ref. to Is. 8:23) אין נמסר עַם ע׳ בתורה ביד מי המציק לו the people (of Judah) that studies the Law with painstaking shall not be delivered into the hands of him who distresses it.
